It is impossible to tell without knowing which themes you are using and which you are considering to use. Themes can vary greatly in quality, content layout, etc. In theory, you should be able to change themes without a great deal of re-work, but in reality, there are some very poorly coded themes out there that can really jack up a site.

I would strongly suggest you make a full backup (and test it) before attempting to change the theme, then if things go south you can easily revert to its current state.

As it's been said, you must always make sure to always use a well coded reputable theme for a production website.

That said, if you have used a well coded theme you should be able to easily try and test different themes and come back to your original creation without any problem.

That is if you do not make any major changes to design and content while testing a different theme. In such case, be sure to take notes of the changes you make and then turn them back to prior state before re-activating the original theme.

Theoretically, you should be ok switching to a different theme and witching back. For example, if you are experiencing an issue and want to eliminate your theme as the cause switch to the 2019 theme (or any wp default theme). If the issue persists you will know your theme is not the problem.

To be safe, create a backup of your site by downloading all files and folders, from the root down, to your computer using FTP. Use phpmyadmin to create a mySQL backup. There are plugins that will do this for you, but why add another plugin at this point?

You should also be using a child theme of your theme. These last two points should be ongoing

You can try out the changes with the new theme on a staging site if your Web Host offer the staging option. Then, if you like the changes you can merge the staging site with your primary site without breaking anything down or any service disruption.

The second option is to use sub-domain as a test domain where you can try out any design or code related changes. Just make sure to turn off search engine visibility for the test domain.
