Learning HTML and CSS

A basic understanding of both can be achieved pretty fast if you have good learning material. How many hours it will take you is difficult to tell.... Maybe 5-6.

I spent a lot of time reading and referencing the above-mentioned w3schools.com website, but I didn't finally understand the positioning of divs until I read this page:

It depends on your learning level. Sure some people can say it takes about 6 hours to learn the basics but it depends what you define as basics. If you want to learn the ins and outs of CSS it can take at least a year of learning and experience depending on how much time you put into it.

If you are a hands on experience type of person use dreamweaver software and practice on this software of your HTML and CSS skills.

use w3cschools with this software and you will overcome the learning curve faster.

Don't run at the back of time. You need to expert on them!! It all depends on how intelligent you are to grasp things and how innovative you are to make something new out of that.

w3schools have a good collection of resources for free try it out. Or purchase some books and join some tutorial classes to get detailed in-depth knowledge in them.

I also learned almost everything I know w3. I would also recommend everyone to learn to program for Notepad + +. It is a free program that does no real programming for you. But he admits the program language, you have to do with colour coding and built-in functions.

It depends on the person's learning level. if the person is a fast-learner, few hours would be enough. But if he lacks bits of intellect, then, it's another story.

  There is a big difference between Basic knowledge and Understanding.
  
  You can get a basic understanding by reading a paragraph... or spending 5 hours going through w3schools.
  
  To get a true working basic understanding could take weeks... depends how you wrap your mind around things. what takes me a day could take you an hour.
  
  If you want to get a good understanding...nothing is better than building little mini sites and getting your hands dirty and figuring out why things aren't working. Understand the differences between browsers....
  
  I would personally start at w3schools and work through their exercises NOT just read the articles.

HTML is very easy, it only took me a few hours to learn waaay back in 1997 when I was a college freshman! If you don't want to learn it and want a shortcut just use a WYSIWYG editor. I have a free one at my blog if you need it. It's not the blog in my sig but that blog has a link to it if you want to click through.

First we need to define what are the basics of HTML and CSS ...
Then determine what the threshold of your knowledge ...
Frivolous to say that it can learn in one day or several hours ...
I would advise you to at least seven days ...

It takes less than a day to glean the basics from several tutorials available on the internet. However, to get a complete knowledge it might take months or years depending on your level of understanding and intellect.

I'm sorry, but anyone acting like you will have any kind of real understanding of HTML and CSS in a couple hours or days is just wrong. I would love to see someone write a website and style sheets of any level of professionalism in that time. You can learn some basic concepts but not near enough to create a professional looking site.

A good weekend, the right software installed and ready to go, and a couple of books with good relevant examples you can work through.

As far as languages go, html is definitely one of the easiest. it's the gateway language
