Joomla or Wordpress for a Membership site

Hey All,

I'm putting together a membership, but trying to go the easy route of Wordpress or Joomla.

Requirements
Must be able to recognize users IP and serve content for their location.
Must be able to accept payment and give associated credits
Users must be able to rate each other
User must have all associated member details viewable
Theres more to it, but nothing really groundbreaking.

What I'm hoping for is either recommendations or a link to a website that details how to do this.

Any help would be appreciated, doesn't necessarily have to be free either, would consider paying for the help to put it together.

100% wordpress although you will probably need to pay for the membership plugin. Theres tons of them out there however I'm afraid with membership scripts you get what you pay for so make sure you do a good level of research first. Whatever you do, don't just buy the first one you see.

Do a blog search for wordpress membership plugin reviews.

One I do recommend is at WPMU DEV but you'll have to become a paid member first and this script is really designed for wordpress multi-user sites.

    Good luck.

Definitely wordpress... You can try Optimize Press which really great. But if you are on a budget, get the S2Membership plugin which is totally free.

Wordpress is a blogging platform and despite having lots of plugins and themes, was meant to be for blogs in the first place.

Joomla on the other hand, is a CMS. A CMS is supposed to handle membership and information like that. Joomla has also decent support and plugins.

    Good luck.

Joomla is NOT by any means user friendly and I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they can read and write php. I know its a CMS but its only really a CMS once its up and running and all the designs and personal modifications are in place. I've got a ton of experience with many CMS platforms and shopping cart scripts and Joomla is not something I would recommend to a novice and certainly not over wordpress.

Your correct Wordpress was initially a blogging platform and in many ways it still is however its become so much more over the years and especially with the introduction and merger of WPMU, its become an ideal tool for social networks and membership sites. Some of the membership plugins that are available today are so well made that they blend flawlessly with the wordpress code so much so it doesn't even feel like your using a plugin.

In regards to the size of the community and the levels of support, as well as the plugins and themes, joomla doesn't even come close to Wordpress IMO.

Although both can handle your requirements without problem, WP is the choice to go with, all WP addicts will tell you so, join the club

Thanks for the replies. I have both Joomla and Wordpress Sites up and running and would agree that Joomla should be the preferred choice. Though my Joomla site just seems way to restrictive, as the poster said, you really need to know php to get the most from it.

Going to try and set it up with Wordpress, just need a really good tutorial to flip to from a blog to a CMS.
