Should one be afraid of using JS, modern html and online technology? jQuery etc

I remember 10 years ago webdesigners were recommended to only use vanilla html as most users would not have modern technology or would have it turned off in their browsers.

What about today?

NB that I am today running a company with modest success while we are only using vanilla html... I would like to use some modern techniques to make the site convert more, but kind of afraid to implement stuff that would only suck and not work in various browsers/parts of the world.

Your suggestions?

    Hi,

I really have no hesitations over this...
For people who have JavaScript turned off I simply serve them a nice warning on top of my sites. The same goes for those with older browsers, hopefully according to StatCounter Global Stats - Browser, OS, Search Engine including Mobile Market Share these are disappearing (I'm talking IE 6, 7 and even 8).
I don't see any good reason to hold back.

    Seb.

Do you use Facebook ? Then you can make money just by inviting people to a Facebook group ! It's called the Instant Income System. How cool is that?

Most modern browsers support modern HTML5 etc. IE is the problem but some small CSS fixes get around those problems.

A more attractive site is a site you will remember distinctively.

We use an adaptive approach that renders different HTML based on the devices user agent - so for example on a smartphone like the iPhone5 it will present a jquery, html5 and css3 based layout but if the same site is viewed on say an older Blackberry it will display different HTML layout thats more compatible for that device ie XHTML MP doc type and perhaps no javascript.

Our goal is to provide the best user experience to our clients and end users and so we use our own framework to do that - something to think about...

One extremely import thing to remember is page loading times... the more complex scripts, and css, images etc you use the slower the site will perform... unfortunately not everyone has unlimited data plans or LTE 4G connections! Cant wait to see where we are at in the next 18 months though!

Sorry, I am too busy helping people to think of a cool signature!

That sounds awesome, although perhaps a bit overkill for myself.

I might go for plain vanilla HTML/CSS and introduct some JavaScript that will not break the site for users who do not use JS.

I suppose they will simply not see the JS parts? OR will it prevent them from seeing the site altogether? Or mess up the site completely?

I think some JavaScript like the "hellobar" or similar will make the site more "techy", which might be good as we are a software company, while also improve the conversion rate or email signup rate if we steer them there.

would be awesome if it did skip over it lol - we tested the 8300 thru 8500 BB with google maps integration and it literally froze the browser dead in its tracks

bizarely though we've had it work with other jquery scripts... we basically do conditionals like i mentioned before that seems to be our solution... we specialize in this kinda thing so its part and parcel of what we do
