Backing up WordPress question?

I'm really diggin WordPress now that I'm a little more comfortable with it.
I know that there are a few different options available for backing up the WP site. The two options I seem to see the most are WP twin and Back Up Buddy.
What are the pros and cons of either one of those and is one better than the other?

  • i have not used any of these (Wp twin and back up buddy), but i suggest you try them and see their performance. Sometimes experience is the best teacher.

    • At $150 ea. I'd like to hear from those who use either of these wp back up plugins instead of dishing out 300 bucks for the both of them just to try them out.
  • What hosting control panel are you using? Most control panels have a backup utility that will allow you to backup the entire account - files, databases, emails, DNS etc etc...

  • Both plugin are quite popular.
    I personally think BackupBuddy is a better plugin.
    Backups, migrations, restorations, transfers, repairs, and more have always gone flawlessly for me.
    I tried WPTwin awhile back and it seemed to work fine, but it just didn't seem to be on the same level as BackupBuddy.
    Certainly you can backup your site(s) with just phpmyadmin for free but you would need to know how to do that and it needs to be done manually, so you can't set up automatic backups to Amazon S3, Rackspace, or others like BB can.
    If it was me, between the 2 plugins, I'd go with BB, set it up to automatically backup once or twice a day, and forget about it. If you have an issue with the site, you can restore a backup quite easily.

    • You can also try BackWpUp - it is commercial now but I can send you an older version 2.x which is free. I'm using it to backup files and database to Amazon S3 and works perfectly.

  • I use Wordpress Backup to Dropbox (WordPress › WordPress Backup to Dropbox « WordPress Plugins). It automatically backs up your important Wordpress files to a Dropbox account (free to sign up if you don't have one).
