Best host I ever had, but they sold to Mojo Host. Which is also great, but not cheap.

I just checked out the website for Hosthead... I wonder if someone bought the domain or what the deal is.

Is your market local or worldwide?

If it's local, you really need a web host who will host your website in your country.

For a global site, this is less of an issue, but it's worth having a look at a CDN service like MaxCDN or Cloudflare who offer a free version. What a CDN does is copy your website all around the globe and so when people access a website, it's sent from the closest possible server, meaning it loads in a decent time (this is in addition to hosting).

I've been on some foreign websites before which have been hosted abroad and even on a fibre optic connection, I've left some sites thinking that it just wasn't working, when in-fact it was just due to how much of a delay there was.

As for a host, I've currently been using Siteground and have been very impressed. Everything I've broken, they've fixed for me, they reply to my messages within about 5 minutes at any time of the day/night and my speed statistics have been really good, even on their most basic service.

Try messaging a few hosts through their live chat feature and getting an idea of response times and how knowledgable they are. Some hosts I looked at recently had a live chat feature with no-one online.

i have tried almost every hosting company out there over the years, and as far as i am concerned HostGator is the absolute best... host unlimited sites, unlimited bandwith, unlimited disk space... all for one super small price... one of the cheapest and one of the best at the same time + easy to use and very good service... i have had 0 problems in all my years, but with other hosting companies, it has been one pain after the other... but this is just my experience, might as well be totally different for some other colleagues here

    good luck!

Wow...I was expecting decent suggestions but the first 5 or 6 are just terrible.

@bob, what's your budget? Do you need root access to the server? How mission-critical is the site(s) you're hosting?

A lot of those shared hosts that people recommended are cheap, but shitty.

    Hey !!

You should most definitely go for Host Gator. The most reliable host I have ever used. Almost 99% up time. And the support is simple amazing. When ever you are facing any issue you can completely rely on the support to fix it right at the moment.

    I rate it A+++

If you're not the type that needs to speak with someone, then Name Cheap is great. Great dedicated servers too.

If you like people on the phone for CS then Hostgator has to be my choice.

It really depends on what you're looking for. Obviously there are a variety of different hosting options out there that fill a variety of different needs. I would avoid EIG owned companies like HostGator. Usually the smaller hosting companies have a better commitment to service and better service.

If you're looking for good WordPress shared hosting, I would take a look at Nexcess or Ahosting.net, both of whom I've worked with and are fast and reliable with great service.

    Hi all,

Thanks for your responses and suggestions. I am not looking for EIG companies (hostgator, bluehost etc.) - they are not worth my time and money. You may ask why?? For last 30 minutes I am waiting for chat to start but it is still showing as estimated wait time as 30 minute. Did I forget to mention their slow speed?? One of my 22 KB site is taking 26 seconds on one particular server.

My requirements are simple. I need wordpress hosting that is fast, secure, reliable and not too costly.

The problem with small companies is that they might have good support but they lack security and are not reliable.

Any other suggestion apart from hostgator, bluehost and godaddy?

    Thank you.

@bob, I currently use probably 10 different hosts, but mostly VPS, dedicated, or cloud servers.

For not-super-important WordPress sites, these guys have been great, and they even offer SSH access:
    https://shockhosting.net
Plus I see they have a 50% off coupon right on the home page.

I have a couple WP sites hosted on a Digital Ocean VPS which are actually slower than my shared Shock Hosting sites.

For shared hosting, I've found DreamHost, GoDaddy, Netfirms, and Hostgator to be worse as far as speed and support.

But then I use Hostgator for my hosting, as most marketers do, its the best. Folks don't host with godaddy because they are slow.

Hostgator is by far the best, If anything thing don't use GoDaddy for hosting as their hosting is very slow, GoDaddy is only useful for buying domain names

I used to love HostGator. I'm in the middle of an 11 hour downtime impacting their reseller accounts today.

They just aren't what they used to be. I'm doing research on other hosts as I will be moving all of my sites off of HostGator after this experience.

I've been trying to contact support due to outages and slowness I've been experiencing. You will wait a minimum of 30 minutes for live chat. I didn't find them helpful either. Tickets seem to take at least 24 hours.

Like I said, they used to be awesome but not so much anymore. I'm going to check some of the other hosts mentioned in this thread.

Yes, it is somewhat humorous. I wonder if any of the Hostgator fans are re-assessing their view of the company right now. Not sure how many total sites have been down for an extended period now, but it's quite a few. Goodbye Hostgator.

Of course, EIG owns BigRock, Bluehost, FatCow, Hostgator, iPower, Purehost, SEO Hosting and a bunch of others.

Just been through a terrible week of downtime at Hostgator.....

All my client websites were down....very embarrassing and unprofessional to say the least.
Their support has degraded over the last 6 months and a couple of my client sites have been impacted by several specific outages this year.

So from my perspective, there is no way I can recommend Hostgator at all....I'm actively researching for a replacement....

    Regards
    Greg
